Treatment Information
KQ-XRNTM (28-0-0) by Kugler was applied to five strips at 2 gal ac-1 on
August 24 at R4/R5. In this product, 72% of the N was slow-release form.
Agronomic and Weather Information
Soybeans with a 2.6 maturity rating were no-tilled into corn residue in
30” rows on May 15. The seed was treated with a fungicide, insecticide,
and a B. japonicum inoculant. The field received approx. 7.16 in. of rain,
with approx. 60% of this recorded in August. This year was also warmer
than normal, with 2071 GDDs (compared to avg. of 1942) accumulated
from June 1 through August 31.
Results
Results
On average, the fertilizer did not increase yields (Table 2). However, it
appears that yield response may have occurred in the higher-yielding
portions of the field (>60 bu ac-1). A foliar N product was also applied in
Deuel Co., but with nearly opposite proportions (75% of N as urea and
25% slow-release). Results from this field in Aurora Co. showed more
potential. Besides product formulation, other key differences between
these two trials included: an earlier application in Deuel Co. (Aug. 1 @R3);
the Deuel Co. field was previously chopped for silage; and a lack of >60 bu
yield zones in the Deuel Co. field. Therefore, future foliar N trials are
needed to better-understand their role in SD soybean production.
